Dear Folks -
One of the most pernicious evils coming from some forms of religion, especially some expressions of Christianity, is that of achieving perfection. This is understandable. It just isn’t mature. We begin our lives finding safety and security by following the rules of whatever “tribe” we were born into. We never truly “grow up” however until and unless we are willing to transgress those boundaries. There are profound treasures of truth buried both within us and in the wisdom of the world if we are willing to cross the lines that confine us. Embracing these truths is what allows us to experience and express who we truly are.
That, in summary, is what the talk I gave in Ordinary Life is about. In it I claimed that our true Selves showed up in the rescue efforts after Harvey. People were not asked about their religion, immigration status, education background or educational achievements - or anything else. They were just invited to “get in the boat.” Or, the responders went to whoever was in need of being rescued.
