Dear Folks -

This week the title of my talk was

“A History of God”

This is also the title of a very important book by Karen Armstrong. The “God” in question, both in my talk and in her book, is the “God” of the monotheistic religions - Judaism, Islam and Christianity. My talk refers to Armstrong’s work but in no way replicates it.

The topic of God is not only immense but also is a territory filled with land mines. The notion that God has a history or evolves borders, for some, on the edge of heresy. One of my professors was fond of saying, “Never dare a heresy, never gain a truth.”

My primary goal in this talk is to get those who hear it, or read it, to simply be open to exploring what your conception of God is. Even more, to answer this question: what is the character of your God?

Our understanding of whatever we mean by the word “God” shapes everything about us - whether we are aware of this or not. Our true identity is who we are in God. No more. No less. If this is so, what is our understanding of “God”?

For those of you who want to dig further, I have found the works of Diarmuid O’Murchu, “Quantum Theology” and “Incarnation: A New Evolutionary Threshold” most helpful.

That is a very brief summary or the talk I offered in Ordinary Life this week.
