Dear Folks -

The threat and dangers of “fundamentalism” grow in our world. This is true of “Christian Fundamentalism” in our country. Many in our society are behaving like abused children in adult bodies. This creates a climate where empathy for one another becomes more and more difficult and unlikely. Yet that empathy is exactly what is called for if we are to learn to work together across that which now seems so permanently to divide us.

The solution, at least one of them, to this is that we develop the willingness and capacity to listen, to listen faithfully and deeply. First, within ourselves and, then, in a religious tradition that can ground us in wisdom about who we are and the importance of “loving the neighbor."

That is a very brief summary of the talk I offered in Ordinary Life this week. I called it -

“Faithful Listening"
