Dear Folks -
One of the things I want to do in my work is to offer images of
hope for the future. In this Ordinary Life talk I give examples of
how many people feel betrayed by both the religious institutions they
thought they could trust and there is also a feeling on the part of
many of betrayal by our government. Examples of each are given. There
are also examples of positive reasons to take hope - such as the
emergent church movement. I end up by offering images of, of all
things, a hippopotamus and a tortoise that can hopefully awaken in us
the desire to provide nurturing relationships to those who feel
abandoned.
Much love,
Bill Kerley

Dear Folks -
I have begun a new series in Ordinary Life. I'm calling it
"Return to the Center." This "life talk" is titled "The Front Porch"
and is intended to introduce the series. I talk about how far off
from center we have drifted and are, likely, not even aware of it. We
must use both the best of scientific insight and faith to apprehend
the "truth" and make it applicable in our lives. Front porches used
to be a common architectural feature of houses. Front porches were
places were people gathered and talked and they "introduced" one to
the heart of the house. Our work is designed to go to "the heart of
the matter" so our hearts can be transformed so that the places to
which we go in the world can also be transformed.
Much love,
Bill Kerley

Dear Folks -
Sorry this is a smidgen late in getting to you. I'm still digging
out from under the pile of stuff that accumulated while we were on
holiday.
This past week I spoke a bit about our trip to England and Turkey
and then began to introduce a new series I will begin in Ordinary
Life this coming week. I am calling the series "Return to the Center"
and will revisit in what I hope are new and fresh ways the principles
of Ordinary Life. This week, in addition to speaking about our
holiday, I also talk about the fact that here are some assumptions
that if we do not come out from behind can rule and ruin our lives.
In this talk I say what some of these assumptions are and how
important it is for us to be aware of them.
Much love,
Bill Kerley

Dear Folks -
Since this talk is the last one I'll do in Ordinary Life until
August 5, I chose to spend the time talking about some of the
assumptions I've been working from in the series "Having a Religious
and Spiritual Fit." As usual I think the spoken version is better
(more complete) than the text here. One of the things I do in talking
about the matter of authority is to talk about how in the Protestant
version of Christianity it came to be that there was, and is, a
division between "liberals" and "conservatives." My suggestion is
that we let neither label define or confine us. The presentation ends
with my version of the stonecutter story.
I am on my way for a holiday in England and Turkey. A great line-
up of guest speakers is in store for the rest of July.
Much love,
Bill Kerley
