Dear Folks -
An event occurred recently that caused my beautiful bride to share with me a prayer she got from Mother Teresa. The prayer is, “May God break open my heart so that the whole world can fall in.” That reminded me of a “blessing” I first learned in taking the Vipassana meditation training many years ago. The blessing extends loving-kindness and compassion to all people everywhere. This, in turn reminded me, that this inclusiveness has been part of what is called “the perennial tradition” since around 2,500 B.C. In these divisive times we need reminding of this hoped-for wholeness.
All of this dovetails perfectly, at least for me, into a parable of Jesus about a shepherd who leaves a flock of ninety-nine sheep in search of one that stayed off. The parable is open to many different interpretations. I talk about what they might be and their applicability to us in the talk I offered this week in Ordinary Life. I called it -
From Reason to Wonder
