WEEKLY PODCAST | In Between.081

Holly: “I love us…and I want us to be better.”

Bill: “That’s the title of this podcast…right there.”

I’m talking about humans. I love us. We are such an inquisitive, creative, optimistic, and hopeful species. We are the universe becoming conscious of itself. And…we are such a violent, destructive, harmful species. Both of these are true. You can love a thing, a person, and still want it to be a better version of itself. I think about what it means to be a good human all the time. These wonderings range from the very meta (“What is the meaning of life?”) to the very particular (“How can I love my kids just a little more whole today?”).

We are meaning makers, community seekers, and our communities shape our individual selves, so the wellness of the community matters to the wellness of the self, and vice versa. One of our incredible and daunting tasks is, in the words of James Baldwin, to make this place “a more human dwelling place.”

What does that look like to you, to become more human? Are you hopeful? Are you hurting? Is it both? Howard Zinn, author of A Peoples History of the United States, finds incredible hope in the daily acts of LIVING WELL, living justly. This is what it means to love Jesus to me, to stay hopeful and love justice, and above all, to love one another.

Thanks for listening, and we’ll “see” you soon.

PS: I highly recommend reading Baldwin’s “Creative Process.” You can find it HERE.
