Dear Ones -

We called the time in Ordinary Life this week -

We Meet At a Very Deep Well
Bring a Big Bucket

I began be recounting a story John Sanford tells of time me spent growing up in a house without "modern conveniences" - no running water, electricity, etc. They did have a well that gave the clearest and coolest and most refreshing water. The day came when they "modernized" and put in electricity and running water. They had to drill a new well and covered the old one up. Years later, Sanford went back to check on the well of his youth only to discover that it had dried up. He found out that such a well depends on being used to retain its freshness. This is true for us as well. We need to do the work of going deep. We are using material found in the Gospel of John to do this deep dive.

This class was based on the story of Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Holly, using liberation theologian Musa Dube's beautiful rendition of the story, provided a different point of view in understanding it. I talk about the important role of depth psychology for our spiritual growth and understanding. There are two sources of water mentioned in this story - that which we have to dig deep for and that which spring up - often in forceful ways - into our lives. Both are essential.

That’s a brief summary of the time in Ordinary Life this week.
