We began the time in Ordinary Life this week talking about how blessed we are - in so many ways. Not all people are. I was reminded of the hymn that begins, “When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged thinking all is lost, count your many blessings. . .”
Our divided and divisive culture certainly seems like a tempest. One example of this, at least to me, is the soon to be released “God Bless America Bible.” From the beginning the Jesus movement has been the victim of religion. The way out of this is the way of becoming mystics which is the path of paradox and contradiction. For example, in order to know the light, you must first face the darkness that is in you. The mystic does not believe but experiences. We have two needs: The need for a most just and equitable society and the need to know more deeply and truly who we are. These needs are intertwined and cannot be separated.
That’s a brief summary of Ordinary Life for this week.
